CSPS / Smithsonian Summer Fellowships

List of Fellows

From 1997-2003, the CSPS and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage at the Smithsonian Institution coordinated the joint CSPS/Smithsonian Summer Fellowship program. Each summer, participating Emory graduate students with a strong interest in public scholarship spent approximately eight weeks in Washington, D.C. working on research projects related to public scholarship. Project topics and general themes were identified each year by the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and often focused on aspects of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. At the end of the summer, fellows submitted and presented research papers to their hosts at the Smithsonian Institution and their advisors at Emory. Fellows subsequently presented their research results at Emory as a public seminar during Fall semester. Two to three residential internships were available each summer. Interns received a stipend to cover travel and living expenses and registered for four hours of summer course credit.

The Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage is a research institute of the Smithsonian Institution dedicated to the collaborative research, presentation, and conservation of traditional knowledge and artistry with contemporary cultural communities in the United States and around the world. The Center's philosophy is to join high-quality scholarship with strong community service and educational outreach. This has led to activities that have affected policies and practices at local, national, and international levels. The Center produces the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, museum and traveling exhibits, documentary films and videos, symposia, and educational materials; the Center also maintains a documentary collection of expressive culture. Programs and products have earned serious scholarly review, popular acclaim, broad media attention, and professional recognition in forms such as Academy, Emmy, and Grammy awards.
