Proposal Writing Institute for Graduate Students
in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Dean Lisa Tedesco was on hand to welcome students to the 2008 Proposal Writing Institute. Dean Tedesco has been instrumental in expanding the Grant Writing Program and encouraging students to participate at all levels of their graduate careers.

Corinne Kratz, co-director of the Center for the Study of Public Scholarship, welcomed students and briefed them on the Institutes purpose and agenda. This year's Institute included five students from History, English and Religion.

During the Institute, each student participated in a mock interview with an interdisciplinary panel of Emory faculty and staff (pictured above) including Carla Freeman (Women's Studies & Anthropology), Joanna Davidson (CSPS & Anthropology), Matthew Bernstein (Film Studies), Devin Stewart (Middle East & South Asian Studies) and Martine Brownley (not pictured; English).

Students listened as each of them was interviewed. Students, save the one being interviewed, were also privy to the panel's discussion of the propoal and interview once concluded to give them a sense of how an interdisciplinary committee would evaluate their projects and presentation.

On the concluding day of the Institute, students were able to meet with several faculty and staff for hourlong inidividual meetings to discuss their projects specifically. Here, Ivan Karp discusses Jennifer Hughes' proposal.

The final session of the Institute was a general discussion on themes and methodological issues, led by Ivan Karp, co-director of the Center for the Study of Public Scholarship .
