Artists & Critics: Food & Cuisine

CSPS co-director Ivan Karp, moderator of the panel dicussion, welcomed food critic Christiane Lauterbach, food writer Jeffrey Steingarten, chef Scott Peacock, and the audience to Emory for the first event in the new Artists & Critics series .

Jeffrey Steingarten, food writer and judge on the Food Network's Iron Chef America, opened with remarks on how he went from being a Harvard-trained lawyer to a food writer, giving personal accounts on the training of his own palate and how he views himself in relation to chefs, food critics and the growing popularity of TV food personalities.

Scott Peacock, executive chef at Decatur's Watershed restaurant, also relayed personal stories of his upbringing, his childhood love of cooking and the importance of his mentor, Southern cooking legend Edna Lewis, in helping him to preserve and whenever possible, update the Southern food traditions and recipes that he learned as a boy in Alabama.

Following the panel discussion, audience members were able to purchase books authored by Jeffrey and Scott to be signed .

The audience for this panel dicussion was diverse and included students and faculty from Emory as well as folk that traveled from outside the metro area to hear the discussion.

Event organizers and co-sponsors arranged an intimate lunch for the panelists the following day, hosted at the offices of the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry.
